The Best Smart Power Strips (That we’ve reviewed)

This is our round-up of the best smart power strips for 2020. Smart power strips allow you to control devices plugged into the strips though an app or a smart home assistant such as Alexa or Google Home. Smart power strips offer more outlets than smart plugs, which generally only have one or two outlets available.

How Do Smart Power Strips Work

Smart power strips are outlet strips that have built-in wifi. By plugging the strip into a standard outlet and connecting it to your home network, you are able to control the connected devices remotely via an app. Some smart power strips are comprised solely of smart outlets, others have a mix of smart and normal outlets.

What Is The Difference Between a Smart Plug and a Smart Power Strip?

Simply put, it’s size. Smart plugs have one to two smart outlets and are completely smart (no normal outlets), whereas a smart power strip has more than two outlets, in any combination of smart and normal outlets.

There is one important caveat prior to installing smart plugs or smart power strips in your home. Make sure your devices are smart outlet compatible. What do I mean by this? Here is a quick way to test.

  • Power your device on.
  • Unplug your device while it is on. The device will turn off at this point.
  • Plug your device back in.

If your device does not come on immediately when the power is restored to the device, then it is not smart outlet compatible as you will still have to manually turn the device back on when you restore power to the smart outlet. I made this mistake when trying to connect a lamp in our master bedroom. The results? Wasted money on both a smart plug and a lamp.

As you can see, at this price point, most of the outlets have either three or four smart outlets and two to four USB charging ports with 5′ to 6′ cords. As prices increase, the outlet strips may include additional “normal” outlets, IFTTT or Apple HomeKit compatibility, and some are even rated for outdoor use. There are over 1000 different smart power strips on the market, so we narrowed this down by price to keep the list a manageable size.
