Reset Echo Dot

The Echo Dot has the same features as the original Echo, minus the bulky chassis. It’s just as wide as the original Echo but is much shorter and more compact. The Dot also lacks the Echo’s volume ring, rather on top of the device it has two buttons that control the volume. There is still a slight ring that responds to voice commands to let you know your commands are heard, although Alexa may not always understand them.

This article covers the process to reset the Amazon Echo Dot back to its original factory settings. The process can also be used for other variations, such as the Amazon Echo and the Echo Dot Generations 2 and 3.

Why Reset Your Echo Dot?

The Amazon Echo Dot is an impressive, accomplished piece of technology. However, as with any device, it may run into issues functioning properly. There are a number of tried and tested fixes for many of the most common issues, but there are times when nothing seems to work, and it is those desperate situations when you may have to resort to a factory reset to remove the problem and get everything working right again. No need to worry though, the factory reset is a very simple process.

You can use this tutorial, to reset the Amazon Echo, the Echo Dot, and the Echo Dot Generations 2 or 3 back to there original factory settings.

Factory Reset Your Amazon Echo Dot and the Amazon Echo

You can use the same process to reset both the Amazon Echo and the 1st generation Amazon Echo Dot. It only takes a few minutes, but when completed your device will revert back to its original factory settings, as it was when you first got it.

  1. Plug the device into an electrical outlet.
  2. Turn your Echo Dot upside down then find the reset switch, which is a tiny hole.
  3. Use a safety pin, a paperclip, or anything metal that’s thin enough to fit into the hole, to reset the switch. Insert the piece into the reset hole and hold it until the light ring changes to orange and then blue.
  4. Once you let go of the switch the Echo will reboot and flash orange when it enters setup mode.
  5. Using the Alexa app, connect the device to your Wi-Fi and then set it up just as you did before.

Troubleshooting Your Amazon Echo Devices Before Resorting to Resetting Them Back to Factory Settings

Before you reset any of your Amazon devices, there are a few fixes that may work for the most common issues with either of the Amazon Echo devices.

Alexa Isn’t Understanding Anything You Say

Voice control may be smart technology but it doesn’t always work right, which can be quite frustrating. There are times when no matter how hard you try, Alexa won’t understand your commands and will respond with something like, “I’m sorry, but I don’t know that” or “I don’t understand your question”.

This is quite common with Amazon Alexa and there are some simple solutions that you can use to fix these issues. All you have to do is train the system again. To do this, open the Alexa app and select “Settings,” then “Voice Training”. Now, you probably already completed this part during the initial setup, but if you keep hearing Alexa say it doesn’t understand you, the training step must be repeated. If Alexa is having problems understanding a specific word or phrase, tap the “History” button and find it in there then change the words for those commands.

Alexa Disconnects From the Wireless Network

Another problem some people often have with Alexa is it tends to lose its connection to the Wi-Fi network, either temporarily or permanently. When this happens, you may just have to reboot the system or the router to get it back online. If this problem persists, check the setup of the Wi-Fi network for the following issues:

  • Are there numerous devices trying to connect at the same time?
  • Are there too many Wi-Fi networks trying to connect to the same or similar channels?
  • Do you have complex machinery like A/C between Alexa and the router?
  • Is Alexa placed close to a thick wall?
  • Are the wires and plugs pushed in all the way to make a proper connection?

Alexa Continuously Drops Bluetooth Connections

If the Echo Dot continues to drop Bluetooth connections with other devices, you may need to reboot the system. After rebooting the system, if the issue persists and even the paired devices won’t stay connected, here is what you can do. Open the Alexa app and navigate to “Settings and Bluetooth”. Once there, clear all paired devices and then pair each device individually again and hopefully, the connections will be stronger and hold longer.

Always try other troubleshooting tasks first, when you have issues with the Echo. When all else fails, then it may be time to perform a factory reset of your Amazon Echo Dot as a last resort. Keep in mind that once you reset echo dot, everything you configured will have to be done again, such as settings, apps, and more. However, because you have done all this already, you will know exactly what you are doing this time and hopefully get it right.
