The Echo Show Design and User Interface

The new Echo Show is a cute little device that comes in black or white and you can use the screen to display a clock, lists, information, videos, and more. Like the Echo Spot, you can use the Echo Show to video chat with others who have Echo devices, although the screen is much larger than the Show.

You control the Echo Show with voice commands to Alexa just as you would any other Amazon Echo device. Using Alexa on the Echo Show allows you to do many different things, such as answer questions, play music, set timers, control smart home gadgets, set alarms and timers, and more.

The screen on the Amazon Echo Show is perfect for displaying the alarm clock. In fact, it contains multiple different clock faces to choose from, with both digital and analog displays, four of them are even customizable to where you can use your own photos, lists, album art, or even weather information at a glance. The Show has a Dual 2″ speakers that have great sound, making this the perfect device to use as an alarm clock.

You can set different customized voice alarms or ask Alexa to wake you up with a song, a specific artist, or even a playlist. There are two different ways that you can use the snooze to get a few more minutes of sleep; you can say a voice command or simply swipe the screen to silently dismiss the alarm for a while. The Show can display the current weather when the alarm sounds so you will know what to wear for the day. The Show will also display the time; therefore, if you were to wake up during the night you can see the time at a glance. It’s typically the perfect little smart alarm clock for anyone.

Wake up to a “Flash Briefing” of the news and know what’s going on in the world as soon as you open your eyes with Alexa alarm clock skill sets. The Flash Briefing is short audio news releases that help you keep up with the times. To wake up to the news every day, you will have to set up a configured routine through the app. If you are also interested in getting more relevant information along with the news pieces, such as the weather and traffic reports, you can also configure the app to add this in. Start by opening up the Alexa app. To open the main menu, tap the three horizontal lines. Next, tap “Routines,” then tap on the plus sign (+). Tap “When This Happens” then “Schedule and set up the time and day”. Tap “Add Action” – “News” – “Add”.

How to Cancel an Alarm

To cancel an alarm, just say “Alexa, stop alarm”. You can also request that Alexa perform a different task, like play music instead, rather than cancel the alarm.

How to set an Alarm Using Alexa

To set an alarm with Alexa, just say, “Alexa, set an alarm for [note the time and then state AM or PM]”. Alexa will confirm the time so that you can make sure it is correct. For those of us that like to hit snooze a few times, you can add as many alarms as you want, setting them up with your choice of different alarm settings. Once your alarm goes off all you have to say is, “Alexa, turn off” or “Alexa, snooze” to gain an additional 10 extra minutes.

How to Set Up a Music Alarm Using Alexa

This feature didn’t even exist when Alexa was first launched. All you have to do to wake up to your favorite music is say, “Alexa, wake me up to… [the song name] by [artist’s name] at [preferred time],” or you can just specify an artist radio without naming a song.

It works with AmazonMusic, Spotify, TuneIn, Apple Music, Pandora, SiriusXM, and more. To wake up to a favorite radio station, just say, “Alexa, wake me up to [the radio station] at [preferred time]”. The same voice command applies to the news as well, so if you decide you would like to wake up to what’s going on in the world, say “Alexa, wake me up to [a specific news service] at [preferred time]”.

Bedtime Sounds and Sleep Timers

So far, we have learned all about the alarm clock basics, but how about getting some nice relaxing music to drift off to? Alexa just so happens to have a few cool skills for this as well. Try saying, “Alexa, play ambient sounds” for a list of some relaxing soundscapes to help you fall asleep. Also, try saying, “Alexa, play sleep sounds” or “play bedtime music”.

Alexa’s sleep tracks will usually last for an hour, but there are some clever things that you can also do. Try saying, “Alexa, turn the music off in x minutes”. Now you can drift off to get a good night’s sleep and Alexa will turn the music off when you requested. On the contrary, you can simply say, “Alexa, loop this track” and the track will be played all night.

Create An Amazon Alexa Alarm Clock Routine

Another great feature is “Alexa Routines” which allows you to blend music and lights with alarms and devices for an ultimate awakening experience. Use Alexa Routines to wake up to a customized automated process, just the way you like it. This new addition to Alexa is what makes the alarm clock a great feature.

Here’s an example of a routine you can wake up to thanks to Alexa:

  1. Navigate to Routines in the Alexa app.
  2. Select the plus icon to add a new Routine.
  3. Tap “When this happens”.
  4. Select “Schedule” then choose your alarm time preference- add any specific repeat rules, such as every weekend and then tap “Done”.
  5. Tap “Add action”.
  6. Tap “music”, and write the name of the song, artist, playlist, or select a radio station.
  7. Select a source like Spotify. Remember you need TuneIn for radio.
  8. Save your new Routine.

There are many Amazon devices, such as the Echo Spot and Echo Show, that combined with Alexa, make a perfect smart alarm clock. These alarms allow you to use voice commands to set up a perfect customizable alarm system that you can wake up to using whatever you prefer whether it is your favorite song, a great radio station, or even a personalized news bulletin.
